Former players
|
As you get older you probably shouldn’t still be hero worshiping people but I still get a real buzz out of seeing old players from my formative years just walking down the street. Just passed Tony Gale and I can’t stop smiling. Not sure I’d cope with seeing Billy Bonds. I’d probably need surgery to remove the grin.

I bumped into Trev, Keegan and Hoddle in Central London. I was too gobsmacked to speak to them.

Yeah I realised that after I posted. I think my inner child was just starstruck and blurted it out.

Saw Billy bonds while in blue water once , he was queuing up for a coffee which looking back I should have offered to pay for but what with coffee being the price it is these days and me being a tight arse I didn't.

Met most of the Boys of 86 and all gents to a man.
Met Bonzo and Sir Trev separately and again top men.
In fact I haven't met any WHUFC player who isn't from that era. Perhaps thats a reflection of John Lyall and what he expected of his players.

met loads of them over the years (Alvin, a few times), but the only time I ever got nervous was meeting Billy at the fundraising event he did for Isla. still looked ready to play at 70

Aren't you actually meant to ask the forum a question about their experiences after your little yarn?
When you went to the ticket office on a midweek daytime you would sometimes see players. ex-players/coaches etc at the club doing something. Remember meeting Martin Peters on a chilly Tuesday afternoon over there once. He was probably trying to flog some insurance.

Accidentally bumped in to Sir Trev on a London shopping trip absolute Gent. Mrs BC was taking the mick for ages out of me that I was worse meeting him than she was meeting her teenage idol Donny Osmond !!

Bonzo is my alltime favourite Hammer and i dont know what i'd do if i ever met him. at 70 i'd probably have a bloody coronary with the surprise. he's a true Hammers hero and i'm certain that he'd run through walls for west ham.

When we used to do the tournaments at Upton Park first year I was like a wide eyed kid when I first met Frank McAvennie who was my hero in the 80's, By the second and third year it was just like talking to a mate as he was just a nice, welcoming, genuine guy. Met Tony Gale and the ex Mrs loved him!

A couple of years ago I followed Billy Bonds around a dinosaur-themed mini-golf course in Kent. He kept us waiting at every single hole, for which I’ll never forgive him.

I've met Tony Gale quite a few times. Met a lot of the players back in the late nineties.. They were always in the gym at the rollerbowl.. Used to often be sat on the next set of apparatus.

I saw Tony Gale at Gatwick a couple of years ago. I said Morning Reggie.... he smiled politely. Made my day.
